In November of 2023, the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) updated its definition of social studies to the “study of individuals, communities, systems, and their interactions across time and place that prepares students for local, national, and global civic life.” This revised definition is to engage students in questioning and critical thinking based on ten social studies themes.
